Yes, meditation. But we don’t have to think of meditation as just sitting down in a corner and trying to make our mind quiet. It is more of an intention to study what the mind is doing through trying to be aware of its movements. What is happening in the mind at any given time? How can we keep our mind quietly focused on the task in front of us and not drift into other thoughts? What chatter is going on in the mind? How can we quiet that? How can we not have chatter? Is the chatter just constant automatic background noise that we are not paying attention to? What is our mind chattering about? Are we thinking about things to escape from concentrating on the simple thing we are actually doing because it seems boring? I suppose it is a practice of constant mindfulness, of being present. We are always present unless we are in deep sleep and maybe even then. Most people don’t ever think about the idea of stilling the mind so they don’t try. But it really just a matter of deciding to work at it, to hold the intention.
It is easier to do if we do not judge what we are doing or not doing but just being watchful of the mind. Having the intention to first: watch how our own mind works, second: intend to gently have some control over it and thirdly: make it a quiet place so that deeper or more subtle activity can be observed. You asked me about ESP, Yes, sure I can see it functioning. That is because I can be aware of more subtle activity below the level of chatter. Sometimes you can even observe other people’s thoughts coming into your mind because you can tell they are not your own because you know your own thoughts because you are always observing them. The other day for instance I thought of someone I have not thought about in quite some time and that I have not heard from in years. I noticed that I was wondering how she was doing and what she was up to. And literally within 24-48 hours she sent me an email to ask how I am doing. That can’t be random. Did she feel me thinking of her or did I feel her thinking about me? I am not sure. Indeed, she has been going through a lot of major changes at this time.
That happens fairly often probably for everyone if they are paying attention. Maybe that is just telepathy or is that part of ESP? Anyway, the quieter the mind and clearer the heart, the more neutral and equanimous we are, the more awareness and hence access we have to those deeper spaces. This helps to get into those selfless states we want to be in when we are doing our creative activity where we lose track of time. Then some deeper version of ourselves kicks in that is, in fact, connected to the infinite.
