Chapter One
Reconstruction of the Previous Day (2)
Later, Eulalia Crumb Exquisite – the Postmaster, received the day’s outgoing and incoming packages and did what the Postmaster did.
She sorted.
She routed.
She sent the newly arrived pen to the Director’s office.
The pen arrived in a small parcel with a label that was correct in every way. The Director signed for it personally.
He opened the box with mild pleasure, as if opening a tool meant to be used was one of the last uncomplicated joys the world offered without conditions.
He tested the pen for balance in his hand.
He recapped it, set it on the desk, and went to a scheduled staff meeting.
He walked down the corridor at an unhurried pace. The building had its usual mid-morning atmosphere. Doors open, doors closing, quiet conversations passing in fragments along the hall. Papers moved from one room to another. Someone carried a tray of folders. Someone else was adjusting a bulletin board.
The meeting room was already half full when he entered. A few people looked up briefly and nodded. Others continued reviewing the papers in front of them.
He took his seat at the head of the table without ceremony.
The discussion concerned procedural adjustments. Several departments had proposed revisions to the intake system for manuscripts and fragments. The increase in submissions had made the older method inefficient.
One proposal suggested adding another classification step before material entered the archive. Another proposed a clearer method for routing unusual documents.
The Director listened.
Occasionally he asked a brief question.
“Who would be responsible for that step?”
“What happens if the item has no clear category?”
Each question slowed the discussion just enough to reveal the structure of the proposal.
When the room fell quiet he rested his hands on the table.
“These revisions appear reasonable,” he said. “But the system should remain flexible enough to receive unanticipated material. Remember the rule: ‘Keep It Stupid Simple’ so we don’t end up with more tedium than organization.”
He closed the folder.
“Approve the revisions,” he said. “Leave room in the process for the expectation of unexpected anomalies.”
The secretary noted the decision.
A few smaller matters followed. Schedules were adjusted. A supply order was confirmed.
Nothing dramatic occurred.
When the meeting ended, the Director remained seated for a moment, watching the light shift across the table.
Then he stood and returned to his office.
