Childhood Fragments in the Shadow of History

Journal Entry: May 18, 2026 – 8:07 PM

Recently, while visiting my friend, the undisputed greatest living collage artist in Switzerland, Berni Stephanus - age 85 - in Geneva, we spent several days together exploring Geneva, having meals together and discussing his massive body of collage art numbering around 10,000 works of collage since the 1960’s. We also discussed the growing role of artificial intelligence, especially LLMs, in the studio and, more specifically, how tools like ChatGPT might function not simply as generators of text, but as conversational partners capable of helping artists reflect on and articulate the deeper psychological and historical dimensions of their work.

Berni shared one of his recent collages along with a remarkable exchange he had with ChatGPT concerning the image. What interested me was not only the analysis itself, but the way the conversation gradually opened a pathway back into personal memory. The collage became less an isolated artwork than a doorway into lived past experience.

The work immediately presents an atmosphere of unease. A child occupies the lower center of the composition surrounded by toys, parents’ shoes to fill as the child polishes one of the father’s shoes, and other domestic fragments while, looming above, are damaged and fragmented adult figures, one wearing a military cap, another partially erased into metallic textures that feel both human and machine-like. A toy stormtrooper suggesting empire stands nearby like an absurd emissary from the world of spectacle and normalized violence.

What is striking is that the child does not appear frightened. She remains absorbed in her own world. That emotional tension becomes the psychological center of the work.

As the AI analysis observed:

“The collage is not meant as an illustration of one event.

It functions more like a dream or fragmented recollection, where innocence and menace coexist without clear explanation.”

What began as a discussion of composition and symbolism slowly moved toward autobiography. As I often say, everything an artist makes is autobiographical in some way or other.

Berni then uploaded a childhood photograph of himself holding a teddy bear during the war years in Germany. Suddenly the teddy bear within the collage was no longer simply symbolic. It became a surviving trace of childhood memory itself.

Berni wrote:

“I should add that this collage also reflects my own childhood in a village near Hanover, Germany, between approximately 1941 and 1945. My parents had retreated there because of the bombings and because my mother was Jewish. The presence of the teddy bear comes from a personal memory - I had one myself as a child.”

The emotional force of the collage deepened considerably once this connection emerged. The image no longer functioned solely as political commentary or cultural critique. It became anchored in lived history while still retaining ambiguity and poetic openness.

One of the more insightful observations generated during the exchange was this:

“The same teddy bear becomes a fragile bridge between private memory and historical violence.”

I think this touches on something important about collage itself.

Collage often works precisely because it resembles memory. Human memory is rarely linear, stable, or complete. It arrives in fragments, dislocated images, emotional residues, flashes of detail disconnected from chronology. A face, a shoe, a toy, a gesture, wallpaper, uniforms, cafeteria lighting, a child’s expression - all of these survive differently within the mind. The collage process mirrors this condition naturally.

What fascinated both of us during these conversations was the way AI could sometimes function as a reflective surface, helping an artist hear echoes already latent within the work. The machine was not “explaining” the collage so much as tracing pathways through its emotional architecture.

At its best, this kind of exchange resembles a studio dialogue. The artist discovers what the work knows before the conscious mind fully catches up to it. This intuitive form of encounter is central to Bernie’s approach to constructing his collages.

Berni was amazed by how closely the interpretation matched his own intuitive decision making. Berni has always avoided intellectualizing his work in order to maintain a clear connection to his intuitive impulses allowing the deeper non-linguistic creative synthesis to dominate.

Berni’s collage remains powerful because it refuses certainty. It does not collapse into propaganda or fixed interpretation. Instead it preserves the instability of memory itself - where childhood innocence and historical catastrophe exist side by side in uneasy and ironic proximity.

The child remains seated among scattered shoes and toys while above her the adult world fractures into masks, uniforms, spectacle, and authority.

History hovers overhead.

But the teddy bear survives - an imaginary companion, confidant and protector.

Observing the collage we can see how the compositional structure works in a very classical way in terms of placement and scale of the various elements.

While skeptical of verbal explanation and Bernie’s insistence on ambiguity and intuitive understanding on the viewer’s part, we discussed the possible use of an LLM to provide textual context for Bernie’s sophisticated works that might help viewers to understand, at least in part, his recurring iconography which is constantly exploring and commenting on society, the human condition and the circumstances we all find ourselves in no matter who we are or where we live.

I suggested that, like all lifelong artists, we are constantly wandering around in the chambers of our own hearts, our own house where we know every nook and cranny and it is difficult to point out to others in language all of the wonderous things that could be discovered by visitors if invited and given enough instruction to find their way around and have an inkling of what they are seeing.

I am looking forward to what Bernie comes up with related to this new collage tool and how it might enhance the viewers understanding of his massive body of work.

Executive Order No. 004

On the Preservation of the Imagination from Exploitation

By the authority vested in me as Queen of the Realm of Elsewhere, by the Royal Charter and the Laws of Said Realm, it is hereby ordered:

1. That the Imagination, being the common air of the Realm, shall not be privately owned, mined, or monetized beyond reason. It is the inheritance of every citizen and the birthright of all beings endowed with wonder.

2. That no corporation, ministry, or influencer shall claim exclusive authorship over ideas which have clearly wandered through the public meadow of inspiration for centuries.

3. That artists, writers, inventors, and dreamers shall be free to draw upon the universal reservoir of symbols without fear of bureaucratic interference, provided they give credit to the Muses in general and to the Mystery in particular.

4. That creative imagination is the coin of the realm. The overproduction of imitation (known within the Realm as Content) shall be restricted to quantities that do not endanger the ecosystem of authentic thought.

5. That all citizens are hereby encouraged to practice Creative Conservation: using imagination responsibly, allowing periods of rest between projects, and refraining from extraction when the wells of vision run dry.

6. That the Ministry of Reverie shall oversee the replanting of neglected ideas and the restoration of lost myths, ensuring that the soil of collective imagination remains fertile for future generations.

7. That any entity found guilty of exploiting imagination for manipulation, propaganda, or vanity shall be sentenced to a term of contemplative service in the Gardens of Silence, where nothing may be posted, streamed, or self-promoted for the duration of one lunar cycle.

8. That all acts of true creativity are to be regarded as sacred offerings, not commodities; their value lies not in replication but revelation.

General Provisions

(a) Nothing in this order shall be construed to impair or otherwise affect:
 (i) the authority granted by law to an executive department or agency, or the head thereof; or
 (ii) the functions of the Office of Self-Governance (OSG) relating to budgetary, administrative, or legislative proposals.

(b) This order shall be implemented consistent with applicable law and subject to the availability of appropriations.

(c) Contracting outside the Royal Government to circumvent the intent of this order is prohibited.

(d) This order does not prohibit making reallocations or reassignments to meet the highest priority needs, maintain essential services, and protect public peace and safety.

The above is partly an asemic document and partly a Fluxus Laboratories experimental artifact.

I have a pile of old papers such as the above that I have collected for use as collage material. This one, dated Oct 1, 1926 is a letter asking for payment of work done from Baker Perkins LTD Engineers.

At the beginning of the year I decided that, instead of putting my coffee stirring spoon on a saucer plate, I would use this sheet of paper as a blotter to rest my spoon and let the staining gradually accumulate both front and back with the eventual intention of using it for some asemic writing.

This sheet was used as a blotter for 90 days from the start of January, 2026 to the end of March, 2026. Let’s call it Stain Test #01 - 2026.

At the end of the 90 days I then over wrote the business text of the letter with a more elegant asemic text with a fountain pen.

Here are two photographs of Frank and Bob. Frank and Bob originally showed up in the EFRA as just two named characters with no past, no backstory, no character profile. Just two names. The archives assigned these guys with the above two photos. These are the two actual unassigned photos in the Ontological Museum archives their images are based on.

Of course both of these photos are attributed to the camera work of Ignatius Maximus Anonymous.

Ignatius Maximus Anonymous or I.B. Anonymous was born in the country of Parts Unknown in an undisclosed location on January 1 at 12:01AM in the year 1900. His exact birth location remains unclear.

His father operated a small photography studio somewhere or other and it was there where Ignatius studied his craft. Anonymous was a world traveler and made friends with everyone he met and was often asked by complete strangers to take their picture which he was always happy to do.

He was shy by nature and so, no known photographs of him have ever been identified. He never took a self portrait except for his occasional shadow that might protrude into the image. Mr. Anonymous supposedly died at the age of 99 on Dec 31 at 11:59 pm in the year 1999 but that is merely hearsay and speculation from witnesses who claim to have known him.

And that is the story we tell here at the Archives where we continue to identify and attribute works to I.B. Anonymous as we come across them. We have thousands upon thousands of photos as yet unregistered attributed to Mr. Anonymous. He was, or possibly still is, the greatest and most prolific photographer to have ever lived.

Chapter One continued

Thessaly looked at Penn. “That phrase - ‘Here, try this.’ - on a scrap appeared yesterday in a tray of unassigned ephemera. I placed on the communal writing desk in the Correspondence Hall.”

He replaced the fragment carefully on the intake surface, aligning its edges with the table’s seam as though it required a stable horizon.

“Where is the scrap? Do you have it?” asked Penn

“I didn’t retrieve it, I assume it is still on the desk.” said Thessaly.

“It might be helpful to examine it.” Penn replied.

“My problem is this document still has no drawer,” Rufus added.

“Then it is without context,” Penn replied.

He straightened, adjusted his cuffs once more, and allowed his gaze to move across the Hall.

“Open a provisional file for now until we can figure this out,” he said. “Unresolved Narrative — Pending Provenance.”

Rufus exhaled softly.

Penn did not smile.

He had not yet formed a theory.

But, with this evidence, he had registered a beginning.

And beginnings, he knew, required endings.

The fragment was placed into a temporary folder.

At 9:43 a.m., a second anomaly registered.

A cross-reference pinged in an unrelated catalog entry. A partial match to the phrase “Here, try this.”

Penn paused at the screen.

“Coincidence?” Rufus asked immediately.

“Perhaps,” Penn answered.

He requested the cross-reference file.

Within it were marginal notations attached to a minor, unindexed draft. Two names appeared only once in the metadata trail.

Frank.
Bob.

They had no biographical file.

They had no drawer.

They were not staff.

They were not historical authors.

They existed only in relation to this fragment.

Penn closed the file gently.

“Begin a trace,” he said.

“For what?” Rufus asked.

“For origin.”

Penn remained by the intake table after Rufus had returned to the console.

The fragment lay under the examination lamp. Its fibers caught the light unevenly along the bottom edge, where the paper had separated from whatever had once continued below it.

Penn lifted the sheet again.

He did not read the lines this time. He studied the margin.

Rufus glanced over from the console. “You’re still looking at it.”

“Yes.”

“Anything new?”

Penn turned the paper slightly beneath the lamp.

“The tear,” he said.

Rufus leaned closer. “What about it?”

“It is not the edge of the page.”

Rufus frowned. “Meaning?”

Penn placed the fragment flat again.

“This sheet did not end here.”

Thessaly, who had been standing beside the provisional trays, stepped nearer.

“You believe something is missing.”

Penn inclined his head.

“The lower portion,” he said. “Removed before it arrived here?”

Rufus crossed his arms. “We have already established that the fragment is incomplete.”

Penn regarded him calmly.

“There is a difference between incomplete and removed.”

Rufus waited.

Penn traced the air just above the torn margin without touching it.

“The dialogue begins. The premise establishes itself. Two figures appear, an offering is made, a question follows. The narrative has only just entered its first movement.”

Rufus looked at the fragment again as Penn continued.

“And let’s examine the spacing of the margins. The top of the sheet and the sides are ample and even, about one inch each. The bottom is torn very close to the end of the last line of text. This suggests that the missing torn section may have contained the continuation of the story.

“You can tell that from the structure?”

“Yes.”

“And?”

Penn straightened.

“And stories rarely tear themselves apart at the moment they are about to begin.”

The intake room grew quiet.

The console hummed softly behind Rufus.

Thessaly looked again at the page.

“So the missing portion would contain—”

“Continuation,” Penn said.

“Or the beginning of one.”

Rufus exhaled slowly.

“You are suggesting that the plot is on the missing piece.”

Penn did not answer immediately.

He replaced the fragment carefully in the provisional folder.

When he spoke, his voice remained even.

“I am suggesting,” he said, “that whatever this is, it has not yet reached the place where stories decide what they are. The question is, was the remainder removed? And if so, what was it and why was it removed.”

Rufus returned to the console and entered a note beneath the intake log.

Status: Fragmentary.
Continuation: Unknown.

Penn watched the entry appear on the screen.

Then he spoke.

“Begin a trace. Have staff conduct a search for the missing piece. Maybe we’ll get lucky.”

Rufus looked up.

“For the missing portion of the page.”

“And if it cannot be located?”

Penn closed the folder.

“Then we will have to determine where the story went.”

Rufus stared at the fragment again.

Thessaly said nothing.

At 10:02 a.m., the provisional file was updated.

Penn considered the title for a moment.

Then he added a second line beneath it.

THE CASE OF THE MISSING PLOT

The folder was closed.

And somewhere, beyond the knowledge of the Archive, Frank and Bob continued sitting at a table with a blank sheet of paper between them, unaware that an institution devoted to the care of unfinished things had just begun looking for the rest of their story.

Chapter One Continued

Abernathy Penn Arrives

Penn entered.

The door closed behind him without a sound. He paused just inside, not to gather himself but to register the room. Intake tables. Sorting lamps. Rufus at the console. Thessaly near the provisional trays. Nothing appeared disordered, yet something in the air carried a tense density that did not belong to routine processing.

He adjusted the cuff of his left sleeve - not fidgeting, merely ensuring alignment. The fabric was dark and finely woven, structured but not severe. His tailored jacket followed the line of his shoulders precisely. He wore no ornament beyond a narrow watch whose face was unadorned and legible.

There was about him a faint trace of vetiver - dry, rootlike, almost austere. It did not announce itself. It simply remained if one stood near him long enough.

“Intake anomaly?” he asked.

His voice was low and even, English in cadence though not exaggeratedly so. Each word was fully articulated, shaped with care. He spoke with deliberation and economy, each syllable carrying its full weight.

Rufus gestured toward the console display.

Penn did not step forward immediately. Instead, he removed his gloves - thin, slate-colored kit leather - folding them once and placing them on the edge of the intake table. Only then did he approach the fragment.

He did not touch it at first.

He leaned in and examined the margins. The fold. The edge where the tear had separated the paper from its former whole. His gaze moved methodically, as though every surface offered equal testimony.

“Origin?” he asked.

Rufus gestured toward the intake console. “Channel Seven. Recovered Ephemera. It triggered the wrong protocol.”

Penn inclined his head slightly.

He lifted the sheet with two fingers, supporting its underside with the other hand. The movement was unhurried.

The fragment had no author metadata. No ink analysis had yet been conducted. The paper stock was contemporary but not distinctive. It felt neither old nor newly written.

The fragment bore the opening lines of what appeared to be a story written by hand in ink.

“Here, try this.” Frank says.

“What is it?” Bob.

“Not sure yet.” Frank.

“What’s that supposed to mean?” Bob.

“That means I am just making this shit up on the spot.” Frank.

“OK…” Bob says with a look of incredulity.

“In fact, this thing, that I don’t know yet what it is, has yet to come into existence as possibly some sort of McGuffin – I make no apologies for it – and, for that matter, Bob, I am making you up as well. Currently you and the thing I am trying to get you to try are just larks of my imagination, a momentary experiment in writing something.”

Bob, somewhat confused, looks at his hands, then looks around him trying to figure out where he is and for that matter, who he is other than merely the name “Bob.”

“What the fuck?” Bob.

“Yeah, that’s what I am thinking too… What the fuck?” Frank.

Frank, all of a sudden, looks down at his own hands, feels his mouth, looks at Bob.

“Wait a minute. I don’t think I am making you up. I am starting to think somebody else is making both of us up.” Frank.

They both look at each other.

He read the first line.

His expression steady.

He read the second.

Only at the third did one see the faintest narrowing of his eyes — not shock, not offense, but recalibration.

The tone was not archival.

The diction did not belong to institutional correspondence.

The profanity, though minimal, did not sit comfortably within the Hall’s usual submissions.

He finished the page.

He turned it once beneath the light. No watermark.

“There is no continuation? This tear at the bottom might mean the remainer was removed.” he asked.

“None located,” Rufus said.

Penn held the fragment a moment longer.

He did not appear disturbed.

If anything, he appeared attentive in a new register.

Two figures, an interaction, an unformed offering questioned, premature self-awareness.

And the phrase.

“Here, try this.”

“Is it dangerous?” Rufus asked.

Penn took a slow deep breath, lowered the page and regarded him mildly.

“No,” he said. “It is merely unfinished.”

Chapter One continued

Abernathy Penn Receives Notice

Abernathy Penn’s office occupied a narrow corner above the catalog stacks where the building’s older windows faced the courtyard. The room had been arranged with the quiet precision of someone who preferred every object to justify its presence. A desk stood near the window. Two shelves held a modest selection of reference volumes, their spines aligned with patient exactness. Nothing appeared crowded. Nothing appeared provisional.

Penn sat at the desk reviewing a thin case folder that had been open long enough for the morning light to creep halfway across the page.

The folder concerned a minor matter of attribution - a misfiled letter whose signature resembled three different authors depending on the angle from which one regarded the ink. Penn had already concluded that the matter would resolve itself once someone looked closely enough at the date.

He closed the folder.

The console on the side table emitted a soft tone.

Penn did not look at it immediately. He finished aligning the folder with the others stacked beside it, squared their corners, and then turned.

The console screen displayed a short message routed through intake.

REQUEST: CONSULTATION
SOURCE: INTAKE DESK
ARCHIVIST: ORDEx, R.
CURATOR PRESENT: CERULEAN, T.

Penn read the message once.

Then again.

Beneath it appeared a single notation Rufus had added with reluctant brevity.

UNASSIGNED FRAGMENT - NO DRAWER MATCH

Penn leaned back slightly in his chair.

In the archive, most irregularities solved themselves before reaching his desk. The classification system had been designed with a generous tolerance for anomalies. Almost everything could be placed somewhere if one waited long enough to understand its relation to something else.

But the phrase no drawer match suggested a particular kind of irritation, and Rufus Ordex was not a man who used that phrase lightly.

Penn stood.

He adjusted the cuff of his sleeve with a small, practiced movement, then reached for the slate-colored gloves resting on the edge of the desk. He folded them once in his hand but did not yet put them on.

The corridor outside his office remained quiet. Somewhere in the stacks below, a cart rolled slowly along the floor.

Penn paused at the threshold and glanced once more at the message on the console.

Unassigned fragment.

No drawer match.

He considered the phrasing for a moment, as if measuring the weight of it.

Then he left the office and made his way toward intake, carrying with him the calm curiosity reserved for problems that had not yet decided what kind of problems they were.

Return to Archival Intake Office - 9:12 a.m.

Rufus, unaware of the events of the previous day, stared at the unassigned fragment as if it had personally offended his filing system.

Thessaly, also unaware of the Director’s quiet role, recognized only the shape of the problem:

Instrument - invitation - gesture - loss - recovery.

Rufus said, “We have to put it somewhere.”

“Everything belongs somewhere,” Thessaly said, “but not everything belongs somewhere immediately.”

Rufus’s eyes narrowed. “That is how drawers become philosophies.”

Thessaly did not argue. She merely raised her eyebrows and shrugged.

Rufus grudgingly opened a blank intake form and waited for the system to propose a category. The system proposed nothing.

He looked at the paper again.

He read the profanity again, as if verifying it hadn’t been a misspelling.

“It’s unfinished,” he said, and the way he said it made unfinished sound like a breach of protocol.

Thessaly’s gaze held steady. “Unfinished is not uncommon in the Hall.”

“Yes,” Rufus said. “But unfinished that arrives here is not.”

“Then summons Penn if you wish.”

Penn was notified.

Chapter One

Reconstruction of the Previous Day (4)

Meanwhile, when the meeting concluded, the Director gathered his folder and stepped back into the corridor.

He passed through the Correspondence Hall on his way to the office. He passed by the communal writers’ desk.

A small scrap of paper caught his attention.

He recognized the hand - his own, the one he had earlier pasted to the ad for the pen – he picked it up with the faintest smile. He recalled that the pen back in his office was waiting for him to test it out. He put the scrap in his jacket pocket.

Back in his office, he put the scrap of paper on his desk and uncapped the pen.

He tested the nib.

He wrote a line.

He wrote another.

And then, because the phrase on the scrap lingered, the pen was new, the mind sometimes needing only a small playful prompt, he used the invitation as dialogue and wrote a little scene. As a test and a lark. As the first ripple of something that did not yet know it would become of institutional consequence.

He then placed the small scrap ‘Here, try this.’ into the Chance Decisions Drawer of his desk with all of the other paper slips from fortune cookies and other scraps with criptic statements on them that he used like the I Ching or runes or tarot cards. When required he would pull one out of the drawer, interpret it and act upon it when a new situation that does not have a known policy solution needed a decision.

He was called to another meeting and left the written scene incomplete. As he left, he happened, with his sleeve, to brush the ink test off the desk and to the floor unnoticed.

Within the hour, the janitorial team arrived.

Surfaces cleared, dusted, swept.

And so the fragment was lost but not missed in the most believable way possible: through ordinary routine.

Chapter One

Reconstruction of the Previous Day (3)

Over at Thessaly Cerulean’s office, in the flow of materials being archived, the tray of unassigned ephemera was carried past.

One of the staff, without commentary, set it on the corner of her work surface.

Thessaly looked into the tray. She lifted the scrap.

It was unassuming. Torn from a larger sheet. The back still bore faint adhesive residue, evidence of having been attached to something else. She looked at the hand written phrase.

The phrase did not instruct. It invited.

It lacked both context and substance. It did not merit formal intake in its own yet, it did not justify discard either.

It required response.

Thessaly walked over to the Correspondence Hall. She placed the scrap of paper on the Hall’s communal writers’ desk, for artifacts too general to assign to any single historical hand. This was a desk set up to invite any authors present in the Hall at any given time to write a narrative for orphaned items to give them context in the archives so that they could be filed.

A neat stack of blank sheets rested at its center. Thessaly placed it lightly on top of the stack. She adjusted it once so that the words sat squarely in the center of the page beneath. Then she returned to her duties.

Time in the Correspondence Hall did what it did best. In moments of revery, imaginal presences of writers arrived from their own eras, in their own light, and responded without knowing others would also respond.

That day, the scrap lay on the desk long enough for several writers to notice and be inspired by it.

Chapter One

Reconstruction of the Previous Day (2)

Later, Eulalia Crumb Exquisite – the Postmaster, received the day’s outgoing and incoming packages and did what the Postmaster did.

She sorted.

She routed.

She sent the newly arrived pen to the Director’s office.

The pen arrived in a small parcel with a label that was correct in every way. The Director signed for it personally.

He opened the box with mild pleasure, as if opening a tool meant to be used was one of the last uncomplicated joys the world offered without conditions.

He tested the pen for balance in his hand.

He recapped it, set it on the desk, and went to a scheduled staff meeting.

He walked down the corridor at an unhurried pace. The building had its usual mid-morning atmosphere. Doors open, doors closing, quiet conversations passing in fragments along the hall. Papers moved from one room to another. Someone carried a tray of folders. Someone else was adjusting a bulletin board.

The meeting room was already half full when he entered. A few people looked up briefly and nodded. Others continued reviewing the papers in front of them.

He took his seat at the head of the table without ceremony.

The discussion concerned procedural adjustments. Several departments had proposed revisions to the intake system for manuscripts and fragments. The increase in submissions had made the older method inefficient.

“Approve the revisions,” he said. “Leave room in the process for the expectation of unexpected anomalies.”

The secretary noted the decision.

A few smaller matters followed. Schedules were adjusted. A supply order was confirmed.

Nothing dramatic occurred.

When the meeting ended, the Director remained seated for a moment, watching the light shift across the table.

Chapter One

Reconstruction of the Previous Day (1)

The Archive, for all its traditions, is not sentimental about time. It files by relation. It catalogues by adjacency. It contains centuries the way a desk contained papers: stacked, rearranged, re-encountered.

The previous day began in the Director’s office.

It began with an advertisement. A magazine ad for a fountain pen.

The Director had seen the advertisement earlier, tapped the page twice with his index finger, and torn a scrap from a notepad with the speed of someone who had been ordering tools his whole life. He wrote on the scrap with an old pencil that lived in the cup on his desk.

A note to himself.

Then he tore a narrow strip of tape, flattened the scrap onto the advertisement so it would not drift, and turned the page once more just to see if it held.

Then, almost as a second thought, he opened a catalog listing and ordered the pen marked in the ad.

“Well, if I don’t order it now,” he thought to himself, “I’ll forget to order it later.”

He submitted the order, printed the confirmation, and set the confirmation beside the magazine, aligning its edge in the way a person aligns edges when they have trained their hands to prefer order.

No longer needing it for reference, he placed the magazine in his outbox with the other minor accumulations: clippings, envelopes, a folded brochure, two pages of correspondence he did not intend to answer personally.

Within the hour, staff came through the corridor and did what they always did. They collected the outbox.

It was a quiet institutional practice, not unlike the janitorial sweep that came later. Material moved. Surfaces cleared. The Archive maintained itself by steady, low-drama routine.

The staff member who carried the outbox materials returned to the stacks. The magazine went into a stack with other magazines. The brochure went into a stack with other brochures. The various correspondences went into a folder marked for later review.

And in the act of stacking, the note on a scrap the director had taped to the ad detached unnoticed and drifted silently to the floor.

It landed face-up.

Only three words on a scrap of paper.

No name. No context.

The staff member did not see it. Or saw it in the same way one sees a staple on a floor: registered without meaning, then forgotten.

Later, in sorting, another staff member noticed it on the floor while cleaning up and it made its way into a small tray of unassigned ephemera.

The fragment entered intake at 9:12 a.m.

Rufus Ordex noticed it first because it did not belong to any existing drawer classification. He held it up under the intake light as if the light itself might provide a label.

He called the curator, maybe she knew something about it.

Thessaly reached for it with the calm reflex of someone who spent most of her days among quiet things.

“Yes.”

A brief pause followed, filled with the faint background murmur of the archive rooms.

“Dr. Cerulean? Rufus Ordex here.” His voice carried a certain attentiveness, as if he were already examining the matter from several angles at once.

“Yes, Rufus.”

“I have something at intake that does not correspond to any current drawer classification.”

Thessaly looked once more at the page before her. Her pencil turned gently between her fingers.

“What sort of thing?”

“A fragment,” Rufus said. “A single sheet. It carries no accession number, no envelope, no accompanying note. The paper shows signs of handling but no identifiable origin.”

Thessaly closed the first folder, then the second, aligning their corners with the edge of the desk.

“You have checked the provisional drawers?”

“Yes.”

“And the misfile review?”

“Yes.”

A quiet moment settled between them.

“I believe it would benefit from your attention,” Rufus said.

“Very well,” Thessaly replied. “I’ll come down.”

She placed the receiver back into its cradle.

For a moment she remained seated. The archive building held its familiar morning rhythm - the faint sliding of drawers, the measured steps of assistants moving along the stacks, the distant hum of the intake lights warming to their steady glow.

Thessaly gathered the folders into a neat stack and moved them aside. The pencil she returned to its small tray. She rose, smoothed the front of her jacket, and crossed the office.

The hallway outside carried the scent of paper and binding glue, a fragrance that seemed to belong to the building itself. She moved past the glass panels of the catalog room where two junior archivists worked quietly over a cart of returned volumes.

The corridor turned once, then opened toward the intake offices.

At the far end, Rufus Ordex stood beside the intake table under the bright examination lamp. In his hands he held a single sheet of paper, lifted slightly toward the light, studying it with the patient attention he gave to all things that passed through his care.

He heard her enter and move toward him.

“It has no origin tag,” he said.

Thessaly Cerulean leaned slightly closer, not touching. “That may mean it belongs to several.”

“That is not how drawers work, one object, one drawer.” Rufus replied.

The fragment bore the opening lines of a story. Nothing dramatic. No explosion. No confession. Just two unnamed figures and an undefined offering of one to the other.

And, a few lines in, profanity.

It did not belong to the Archive’s usual temperament. It was small, blunt, almost casual, and precisely because it was casual it landed as a tonal bruise.

Rufus looked at Thessaly as if she had approved the arrival personally.

Thessaly read without reacting. If she registered anything, it was not scandal. It was sequence.

“It reads like an opening,” Rufus said, still irritated by the lack of tag.

Thessaly said, “It reads like an invitation.”

Rufus made a sound that was not a disagreement so much as a refusal to dignify the concept.

The console chimed again, softly. Channel Seven.

Rufus glanced at the routing. “Recovered Ephemera.”

“That channel is for field digitization,” Thessaly said.

“It triggered anyway.”

She watched the paper in his hands, and for a moment the receiving office felt like a room that had been stable for years and had just discovered, without explanation, that its floor had changed its slope by a degree.

Rufus set the fragment down on the intake surface, then picked it up again, as if repeating the motion might correct the classification error.

“We should log it,” he said, and then, with grudging precision, he did.

Timestamp: 9:12 a.m. - Status: Unassigned.

The system refused to suggest a drawer. That, to Rufus, was the first real offense.

Chapter One - The Fragment Enters

On the morning they became aware, a sheet of paper lay between them on the table.

It was not of imposing size, resting as it did upon the low lacquered surface, yet it occupied the center of the chamber with a composure entirely its own. The room had been arranged in the customary manner. Screens painted with pale autumn grasses stood partly drawn, and beyond them the garden’s maples had only just begun to relinquish their green. A faint breeze stirred the blinds, carrying the scent of damp earth and the lingering sweetness of chrysanthemums set out earlier that week for viewing.

Light entered obliquely through a narrow aperture in the shutters, falling across the paper in a long, restrained band.

The two gentlemen did not immediately look at one another. Each was aware of the other’s presence as one senses a figure behind a screen, close enough to alter the air, distant enough to remain undefined. Their sleeves, layered according to rank and season, brushed softly against the tatami as they adjusted their posture. Neither spoke. To speak prematurely, in such a circumstance, would have betrayed impatience unbefitting their station.

The paper had been folded once and then reopened and laid flat upon the surface with the evidence of the crease still visible.

The lower edge extended slightly beyond the table’s lacquered lip, as though the page itself had not yet decided where it properly ended.

Upon the crease lay a small bud, tightly furled, its outer petals pressed close in quiet discipline. It bore the faint bruising of having traveled, as though carried within a sleeve. Perhaps it had been gathered at dawn from the eastern garden but that could not be determined from observation. It possessed no urgency. It rested, and in resting it seemed to suggest that whatever it was, it would become only what it already was.

One of the gentlemen, though he did not yet know what it meant to initiate such an act, felt his attention drawn toward the fold. His hand moved slightly from within his sleeve, then made a subtle gesture as if inviting his companion to take up the brush and write a poem. The other, who seemed to understand that watching may, in certain moments, be more exact than acting, attended instead to the bud’s edge, where a petal had thinned almost to translucence.

The paper lay without impatience indifferent to their presence as it bathed in the morning rays of the sun.

There were no visible marks upon it. Yet both men sensed, without turning their heads, without the smallest alteration of expression, that the page had already begun something neither had yet written. Its stillness suggested prior contact, as though it had once received words that now lingered beyond the reach of sight.

Outside, a single leaf loosened itself from a branch and fell, brushing briefly against the veranda before coming to rest.

They were aware of their breathing.
They were aware of time passing, though no drum from the watch announced it.
Neither spoke.

Beside it rested a writing implement neither of them remembered placing there.

Frank says; “In fact, this thing, that I don’t know what it is, has yet to come into existence as possibly some sort of McGuffin – I make no apologies for it – and, for that matter, Bob, I am making you up as well. Currently you and the thing I am trying to get you to try are just larks of my imagination, a momentary experiment in writing something.”

Bob, somewhat confused, looks at his hands, then looks around him trying to figure out where he is and for that matter, who he is other than merely the name ‘Bob”.

“What the fuck?” Bob.

“Yeah, that’s what I am thinking too… What the fuck?” Frank

Frank, all of the sudden, looks down at his own hands, feels his mouth, looks at Bob.

“Hold on here. I don’t think I am making you up. I am starting to think somebody else is making both of us up.” Frank.

They both look at each other.

Tonight the building spoke again.

To the Chinese, he was half-ghost.
To the British, he was a shadow at the edge of their clubs, a boy who spoke their language with the wrong kind of silence.

When the city began to shift toward its uncertain future, Kai was twenty-six, working nights at a telecommunications company translating early internet manuals. The machines fascinated him: they promised connection without recognition, a place where accent and ancestry vanished into the circuitry.

He began using the office terminals after hours, sending messages into the digital void - letters not to people but to whoever might exist on the other side of language.
He signed them only The Translator.

One night, after a power outage, he found a message in his inbox that he hadn’t written. It began:

I ran away considerably now
to inspect the characteristic countenances.
Enter a gentle stream of air;
enter a wholly restrained sort of psychic marvel…

The words were his and not his.
He recognized the cadence but not the mind behind it.
They read like something recovered from a séance or an unfinished Victorian novel translated by a machine.

He printed the letter and studied it under the desk lamp.
Outside, the harbor fog pressed against the windows, breathing in rhythm with the fluorescent hum.

The letter continued:

…rolling along in commotion
as if craving for release;
taken and passed away from crowding
about the profound terror
which this marvelous intelligence…

He read the line again and shivered.
It felt as though the message were describing him: the crowding of two cultures inside one body, the craving for release, the marvel and terror of identity that refused to settle.

Kai began to write back - not in words, but in fragments, phrases scavenged from manuals, poems, and the old colonial archives. He cut and rearranged them, feeding them into the terminal, watching as they disappeared into the dark.

Over the next months, more replies came. Some were written in the clipped language of official memos, others in the tone of mystic revelations. Always, the same closing appeared:

He came to believe that the sender was not a person but a consciousness forming within the city itself - the hybrid mind of Hong Kong, rising out of its contradictions, speaking through data lines and obsolete modems.

In the weeks before the handover, Kai began recording these transmissions on magnetic tape, labeling each one Mutual Interest No. 1, 2, 3…
He stored them in a wooden chest beneath his mother’s sewing table.

On the night of July 1, 1997, as fireworks rippled across Victoria Harbour, the terminal blinked one last time.

He spent his days translating government pamphlets, contracts, and ceremonial letters. At night, he wrote his own messages to the unknown “elsewhere,” addressing them simply:

Dear Reader of No Fixed Nation,

He wasn’t sure whether the reader was alive, or whether it mattered.

He used the discarded stationery of the colonial offices: heavy paper embossed with faded crowns, the ink slightly greened with age. It felt strange to write in English, the language that had colonized his tongue, yet he needed its distance. Chinese was too immediate, too close to the body. English allowed him to hide inside the act of communication.

Occasionally, while typing, he paused to listen to the faint echoes of celebration outside - the fireworks, the crowds shouting in Cantonese, Mandarin, and broken English. He tried to imagine what kind of language the city itself spoke when left alone at night.

It is my search for you, he typed, because of mutual interest who unfortunately died.

It was an absurd line, yet true. Something in him had died: an empire of certainties, a mother tongue of borrowed grammar.

He began to think of translation as resurrection - the act of giving voice to the unspoken dead. Each letter he sent was a small ritual, part elegy, part experiment in rebirth.

The envelope was blank except for three characters pressed faintly into the paper: 同聲相應 — “voices that respond to each other.”

He unfolded the page. It read:

Your words have reached.
Translation complete.
We will keep your city in the archive of living languages.

The letter dissolved as he read it, the ink bleeding into the paper until it was blank again.

In a small office above Nathan Road, a man sat at a desk cluttered with stamps, envelopes, and the skeletons of old typewriters. He was known, though not to himself, as The Translator. His work consisted of composing letters - letters that never arrived, letters written to “anyone elsewhere.”

No one hired him. He had simply always been there. He is a correspondence poet. His outgoing correspondence a form of publishing, of getting his work out into the world one reader at a time. He had become enamored with Mail Art and what participants called The Eternal Network, an artistic concept representing a global, collaborative, and idealistic network of artists and writers connected through mail art and other forms of communication.

It is my search for you. It is because of mutual interest who unfortunately died…

He typed it again, slowly, with his index fingers, pausing after each word to listen to the faint click inside the machine. The typewriter was older than the internet, yet it hummed faintly when he touched it, as if connected to something vast and invisible.

He knew that every phrase he wrote was a fragment of another language, a syntax from the other side of understanding. He was not translating words, but intentions - the emotional residue of meaning that persisted even after the grammar had decayed.

He sometimes dreamed that his letters were received. In those dreams, an unknown reader unfolded his words in another time zone, feeling the strange pulse behind the nonsense, the urgency beneath the broken grammar. A faint tremor of recognition.

I am the Bank of China Hong Kong, he had written, and reach out to you, TRUSTING that you will give this particular letter.

The Translator had no bank account, no employer. But the phrase felt right. In his intuition, Bank meant reservoir, and China meant the human condition itself, fractured yet luminous. He was translating into correspondence from the margins of bureaucracy among the dispossessed.

Each night, he sealed a letter and left it on the window ledge. In the morning it was gone. Sometimes, in its place, a reply appeared - typed on unfamiliar paper, written in a voice that sounded eerily like his own:

We are in receipt of your urgent transmission.
Please forgive this proposal personally.
Implementation of strategy ongoing.
You are properly understood.

He began keeping two journals: one in Chinese, one in English. Over time, both languages began to blur together, as though a third language were forming between them - a language composed of mistranslations, bureaucratic metaphors, and longing.

One night, during a typhoon, he received a final reply.
The letter had no words, only a watermark of shifting light. When held under the lamp, the words positive consideration flickered in and out like a pulse.

He realized then that he had been corresponding not with a person, but with the echo of human communication itself - the field of language, detached from speakers, trying to remember who it once belonged to.

He left his office and walked out into the storm.
The streets were flooded with neon reflections, each sign vibrating with unreadable messages. He felt them passing through him - advertisements, headlines, names of the dead—all translated into pure light.

Somewhere, elsewhere, someone would find his last letter and understand that it was never about money, never about a proposal. It was the simplest and oldest message ever sent:

And perhaps, faintly, the answer would come back,
